Coriolis flow meters for on-site fuelling and AdBlue

Fuel metering, mobile fuelling trucks and urea dosing

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis meters count kilograms and tonnes of fuel and reagent directly: winter diesel viscosity, batch density and aeration foam do not distort the result. Liquid accuracy is ±0.1%, Arctic and Ex executions run down to −60 °C, and the data goes to plant automation and on-board terminals over Modbus.

The challenge

Why private fuel metering is a task of its own

Site filling points — quarries, ports, logistics hubs, agricultural holdings — and mobile fuel trucks work in field conditions. Fuel is counted in tonnes, reagent in litres, and the equipment runs in frost, dust and vibration.

Air in fuel: foam and phantom litres

When diesel is pumped, the pump often draws air — the line carries a gas-liquid mixture. Mechanical meters count bubbles as product: stock discrepancies, "paying for air" and disputes at inventory time.

aerationfoam

Winter: viscosity and density

At −35 °C diesel thickens: viscosity and density rise, and volumetric meters drift — winter errors reach whole percent points. A reliable fuel consumption audit is impossible on such data.

−35 °Cviscosity

AdBlue: aggression and crystallisation

The 32.5% urea solution is chemically aggressive to plain steel and crystallises already below −11 °C. Mechanical meters jam up with crystals, while corroding parts take the whole dispenser out of service.

32.5% urea−11 °C

Vibration and shocks on fuel trucks

A meter on board a fuel truck is shaken daily on quarry and field roads. Mechanics wears and drifts, and a field repair means downtime and a lost day.

Key principles of private fuel metering

Reference points for private fuel metering: units of measurement, accuracy, materials and hazardous-area protection.

Fuel is metered by mass
The primary unit of petroleum product accounting is mass (kilograms, tonnes): volume and conversions are derivatives. A mass meter closes the chain "receive — store — dispense" in a single unit.
±0.1–0.15% for liquids
The mass channel accuracy is ±0.1% to ±0.15% by execution and size: custody-transfer grade, above typical requirements for private metering points.
316L and smooth tubes
316L stainless steel is compatible with the urea solution (the standard AdBlue equipment material), and smooth tubes without stagnant zones give crystals nowhere to lodge inside.
Ex and Arctic
Hazardous areas — Ex db ib / db ia IIC T6 Gb markings (TR CU 012/2011). The electronics run from −60 to +70 °C, and a remote execution can be installed in a warm truck cab.
The solution

How Mass-EXPERT solves private fuel metering tasks

Coriolis mass measurement is the working standard for site fuel points and reagent lines: the numbers do not depend on season, batch or pump condition.

Kilograms and tonnes, directly

The sensor measures mass: thick winter diesel, light summer fuel and batch changes do not alter the figures. Purchase, write-off and dispensing are all counted in one unit.

Density and temperature, live

The meter is also a densitometer and thermometer: automation receives mass, density and temperature and converts volume to the required conditions for reporting itself.

Field conditions are fine

No blades, gears or bearings in the measuring path: off-road vibration does not start wear, factory accuracy holds, and no field repairs are needed.

Compact sizes for modules

DN15, DN25 and DN40 fit easily into posts, modules and fuel truck skids; straight pipe runs are not required — installation gets simpler.

Data to automation and terminals

RS-485 Modbus RTU, pulse output, 4–20 mA (HART), CAN: mass and totals are available to the dispenser controller and fleet monitoring systems (GNSS/GPS terminals) with no intermediate devices.

Russian metrology, on-site verification

State Register No. 98506-26, verification under MP 98506-26 — on a proving rig or on site, without shipping the meter to a laboratory. Mechanical and imported meters are replaced to connection dimensions.

Two typical scenarios

Fuel (truck):Truck tankPumpAir separatorMass-EXPERTHose reelVehicle tank
AdBlue:AdBlue IBCChemical-duty pumpMass-EXPERT (316L)Dispensing nozzle

Both scenarios work the same way at the metering level: mass is measured right in the dispensing line, and the data goes to the post controller or the on-board monitoring terminal.

Aeration: how to handle it

Air slugs and foam distort any flow measurement — so the module includes an air separator, and density monitoring helps automation spot aerated duty: a drop in measured density is a signal to look at the pump or the product intake. Mass metering counts the liquid actually pumped.

Recommended configuration for a private fuelling point

For a typical post or fuel truck: a DN25 sensor + ME200 transmitter (Ex, Modbus RS-485) + pulse output for mirroring into the controller counter. For AdBlue — the same meter (316L); for small modules — DN15. Send us the medium, flow rate and metering tasks — we will prepare a quotation and dimensions.

The payoff

What accurate private metering delivers

The gap between fuel purchased and fuel actually dispensed is the company's money. Mass metering removes the grey zone between the tanker and the vehicle tank.
