Key benefits for polymer production

Direct mass measurement

Coriolis flow meters measure mass directly, independent of viscosity, temperature, density, conductivity or medium flow profile.

Maintaining stoichiometry

The exact ratio of monomers, catalysts and comonomers is the basis of polymer quality. Mass-EXPERT flow meters ensure high measurement repeatability.

Measurement of viscous melts

Polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC and other melts with viscosities up to tens of thousands of cP are measured without loss of accuracy — mass is independent of viscosity.

High temperatures

Designs up to +350 °C for hot melts and high-temperature polymerization processes. Optional isothermal jacket.

Corrosion resistance

316L / Hastelloy materials for aggressive monomers, catalysts and chlorine-containing media. Full compatibility with the process medium.

Typical media

Measured media in polymer production

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters handle a wide range of liquid, gaseous and high-viscosity media typical of polymer production.

Monomers

Styrene, ethylene, propylene, vinyl chloride, butadiene, acrylonitrile — gaseous and liquid monomers at all supply stages.

Catalysts

Ziegler–Natta, metallocene, organochromium — micro-dosing with high accuracy.

Initiators

Peroxides, azo compounds, radical polymerization initiators — critically important accurate dosing to initiate the reaction.

Additives

Stabilizers, plasticizers, antioxidants, dyes, pigments, fillers — multi-component dosing.

Polymer melts

Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in the molten state.

Plasticizers

Phthalates, esters, extender oils — dosing during compounding to impart elasticity.

Suspensions / emulsions

Aqueous polymer dispersions, latexes, PVC suspensions — reliable measurement without clogging of the measuring tubes.

Comonomers / modifiers

Acrylates, maleic anhydride, methyl methacrylate — precise maintenance of copolymer composition.

Challenges and solutions

Process challenges and Mass-EXPERT solutions

Polymer production is one of the most demanding processes in terms of dosing accuracy and the reliability of measuring equipment.

High viscosity of melts

Melts of polyethylene, polypropylene and PVC have viscosities from 1,000 to 50,000 cP. Volumetric and electromagnetic flow meters produce unacceptable errors or are unsuitable for such media.

Solution — the Coriolis principle

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters measure mass directly, independent of medium viscosity. Straight-tube L-type configurations minimize hydraulic resistance and eliminate stagnation zones.

Reaction stoichiometry

The ratio of monomers, catalyst and initiator is the key parameter determining the molecular weight and properties of the polymer. Even a 0.5% deviation leads to off-spec product.

Solution — precision dosing

Mass-EXPERT flow meters with accuracy from 0.1% and high repeatability ensure stable stoichiometry control. The built-in totalizer allows the catalyst dose to be controlled to within a gram.

High temperature of polymers

Polymer melts and polymerization processes often run at temperatures of +200…+350 °C. Standard sensors are not designed for such thermal loads.

Solution — isothermal jacket + C design

Design C (up to +350 °C) with an isothermal jacket to maintain a stable temperature of the working medium. Thermal decoupling and remote mounting of the electronics (up to 15 m from the sensor).

Aggressive monomers and catalysts

Chlorine-containing monomers (vinyl chloride), acid catalysts and corrosive initiators destroy standard measuring tube materials.

Solution — 316L / Hastelloy

Measuring tubes made of 316L stainless steel or Hastelloy C-276 alloys provide complete corrosion resistance in aggressive media. Optionally — tantalum, titanium and other materials.

Solidification and crystallization

During process shutdowns, polymer melts can solidify inside the measuring tubes, which leads to sensor damage on restart.

Solution — heating and steam tracing

Models with an isothermal jacket and steam/electric heating capability. Special drain configurations for complete emptying of the sensor before shutdown.

Key factor: independence from viscosity

Unlike volumetric (vortex, turbine, electromagnetic) flow meters, Mass-EXPERT Coriolis meters measure mass directly, rather than volume or velocity. A change in the viscosity of the polymer melt (by tens of times when heating up or changing the polymer grade) does not affect measurement accuracy. Direct mass flow measurement eliminates errors caused by changes in temperature, pressure, density and viscosity of the polymer melt.

Selection recommendations

Recommended Mass-EXPERT configurations

An optimal flow meter configuration is selected for each stage of polymer production — by tube type, materials, thermal stabilization and accuracy.

L-type (straight-tube)

Recommended for viscous polymer melts. Straight measuring tubes without bends minimize hydraulic resistance and eliminate stagnation zones. Easy to drain and flush.

PE / PP melts High viscosity Easy draining

Isothermal jacket

Thermally insulated jacket with a temperature maintenance system. Necessary to maintain stable melt viscosity and prevent polymer solidification during shutdowns.

+150…+350 °C Electric heating / steam Thermal stability

High-accuracy design

Calibration accuracy from 0.1% for critical dosing of catalysts and initiators. Optional individual calibration for a specific medium and flow range for microdosing.

0.1% accuracy Microdosing Stoichiometry

316L / Hastelloy

Measuring tube materials: standard 316L stainless steel or corrosion-resistant Hastelloy C-276 for service with aggressive monomers and catalysts.

316L (standard) Hastelloy C-276 Chemical resistance

Design C (up to +350 °C)

High-temperature design for hot polymer melts. Remote electronics design is mandatory. Extension cable up to 15 m. Thermal decoupling and heat-resistant alloys.

+350 °C Remote design Thermal decoupling

Compact / hygienic

For food-grade and pharmaceutical polymers (PET, PS, PVC compounds) — compact configurations with hygienic connections (Clamp, DIN 11851) and final surface finish.

Food-grade Hybrid connections / to your requirements Ra < 0.8 µm and finer

Direct mass measurement — a key advantage for polymers

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters measure mass directly (based on the Coriolis effect), rather than calculating it from volume and density. This is especially important for the polymer industry:

  • Independence from viscosity — the viscosity of a polymer melt can change by tens of times when the grade or temperature changes, but this does not affect mass measurement accuracy
  • Multifunctionality — one device measures mass flow rate, density and temperature, replacing several sensors
  • No moving parts — no wearing elements, minimal maintenance, calibration stability for years
  • High accuracy — ±0.1% for liquids (including melts), ±0.5% for gases and vapors
  • Wide turndown ratio — up to 100:1, allowing both main flows and small additive doses to be measured with a single size
