Coriolis flow meters for the chemical industry

Accurate measurement in aggressive media

Mass flow meters Mass-EXPERT for measuring and dosing aggressive chemical media — acids, alkalis and solvents. Direct mass flow measurement eliminates the influence of varying density and temperature, ensuring the highest accuracy in continuous processes.

Typical media

Measurement of aggressive chemical media

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters can handle a wide range of chemically active substances thanks to special materials of the measuring tubes and housing.

Acids

Concentrated and dilute sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitric acid (HNO₃), phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄), hydrofluoric acid (HF) and others.

H₂SO₄ HCl HNO₃

Alkalis

Caustic soda (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), ammonia solutions (NH₄OH) and other alkaline compounds requiring corrosion-resistant wetted-part materials.

NaOH KOH NH₄OH

Solvents

Acetone, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and other organic solvents used in chemical synthesis.

Reagents and intermediates

Ferric chloride, sulfates, nitrates, chlorates, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), organochlorine compounds and other liquid chemical reagents and intermediates.

Tube materials for aggressive media

To ensure corrosion resistance and durability under chemical production conditions, Mass-EXPERT offers special measuring tube materials.

Hastelloy (C4/C276)
High resistance to acids and chlorides. Recommended for HCl, H₂SO₄, wet chlorine.
Tantalum
Maximum corrosion resistance across a wide range of aggressive media (HCl, HNO₃, H₂SO₄). Not applicable for hydrofluoric acid (HF): tantalum is destroyed by HF — Hastelloy C-276 and special alloys are used for HF.
Titanium
Lightweight and strong. Resistance to chloride media, oxidizers, HNO₃.
Stainless steel 316L
Base material for moderately aggressive media. Suitable for most solvents and alkalis.
Advantages

Why Mass-EXPERT for chemicals?

Coriolis direct mass measurement technology — the optimal solution for the chemical industry

Direct mass measurement

Eliminates the influence of varying density and medium temperature typical of chemical processes with changing composition and heating/cooling.

Corrosion resistance

Special tube materials (Hastelloy, Tantalum, Titanium) ensure reliable operation in the most aggressive media and maximum service life.

High dosing accuracy

Measurement accuracy of 0.1–0.2% allows precise dosing of reagents in continuous reactors, minimizing product composition deviations.

Temperature independence

Mass flow measurement requires no temperature correction. The result remains accurate even during exothermic/endothermic reactions.

Minimal maintenance

No moving parts, no seal replacement or calibration required. Reduced operating costs and downtime.

Multifunctionality

Simultaneous measurement of mass flow, density and temperature. One device replaces several, simplifying the instrumentation and control system.

Direct mass measurement — a key advantage in chemicals

In chemical engineering, reagent density often changes during the process — due to changes in temperature, concentration or phase composition. A mass flow meter measures mass rather than volume, so the results do not depend on these factors. This is especially important when dosing expensive reagents and metering products with variable density.

Mass-EXPERT solutions for the chemical industry

Recommended configurations

Optimal solutions for the chemical industry

Proven combinations of sensors, materials and options for typical tasks of chemical production facilities

L-type (straight-tube) sensors

Recommended for viscous and abrasive chemical media. The absence of bends eliminates dead zones and simplifies cleaning.

  • Bend-free design — no dead zones
  • Minimal hydraulic resistance
  • CIP/SIP cleaning capability
  • DN08–DN50 for a wide flow range

Materials C4 / Hastelloy / Tantalum

Corrosion-resistant alloys for contact with aggressive chemical media.

  • Hastelloy C4/C276 — resistance to acids and chlorides
  • Tantalum — maximum chemical resistance
  • Titanium — an optimal balance of weight and strength
  • 316L — for moderately aggressive media

Accuracy 0.1–0.2%

High-accuracy measurement for critical dosing and metering tasks.

  • Accuracy class 0.1% for liquids
  • Zero point stability from 0.012 kg/h
  • Turndown ratio up to 100:1
  • Metrological traceability

Isothermal jacket

Option for processes with critical requirements for medium temperature stability.

  • Maintaining constant sensor temperature
  • Elimination of external temperature effects
  • For high-accuracy dosing
  • For media prone to crystallization

Recommendation for reagent dosing

For accurate dosing of reagents in continuous reactors, choose the combination: L-type sensor + Hastelloy C276 or Tantalum tubes + ME200 transmitter with HART/Modbus support. If high thermal stability is required, supplement the configuration with an isothermal jacket. 0.1% accuracy ensures minimal deviation of the finished product composition.
