Materials for lithium-ion battery production

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters provide precision dosing of liquids and slurries at all stages of lithium-ion battery production — from active material preparation to electrolyte injection into cells.

Electrolytes

Solutions of lithium salts (LiPF₆, LiBF₄, LiTFSI) in organic solvent mixtures — ethylene carbonate (EC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC). High reactivity and sensitivity to moisture require sealed systems and materials resistant to fluorine-containing media.

LiPF₆ LiBF₄ EC / DMC / DEC

Cathode slurries (NMC, LFP, LCO)

High-viscosity slurries of active cathode materials (LiNiMnCoO₂, LiFePO₄, LiCoO₂) with polymeric binders (PVDF, CMC) in organic solvents (NMP, water). Dosing with accuracy down to fractions of a percent is critical for uniform coating application onto the current collector.

NMC LFP LCO

Anode slurries (graphite, silicon)

Slurries based on natural/synthetic graphite, silicon-carbon composites (Si/C), titanium oxides (LTO) with polymeric binders (SBR, CMC, PAA) in an aqueous or organic phase. They require high flow stability and repeatability during dosing.

Graphite Si/C LTO

Active material components

Accurate blending of conductive additives (Super P, carbon black, carbon nanotubes), polymeric binders (PVDF, CMC, SBR, PAA) and functional additives (FEC, VC, PS) in specified proportions to prepare high-quality active material with a uniform microstructure.

PVDF CMC / SBR FEC / VC

Purity requirements

Lithium-ion battery manufacturing places exceptionally high demands on the purity of process media — any hint of contamination (particles, moisture, metal ions) can lead to capacity degradation, internal short circuits and reduced battery service life.

Moisture content < 20 ppm

Electrolytes and active material components are extremely sensitive to moisture — HF formation from LiPF₆ destroys the SEI layer and reduces cycle life. Mass-EXPERT systems are leak-tight and prevent contact of the medium with the atmosphere.

Humidity < 20 ppm and leak-tightness (dry room)

Dry rooms with a dew point of –40 °C…–60 °C are mandatory at the stages of electrolyte dosing and cell assembly. Mass-EXPERT equipment in IP66/IP67 design is suitable for operation under such conditions.

No particle generation

The absence of moving parts in the measuring sensor eliminates abrasive wear and microparticle generation — a critical requirement for maintaining the purity of slurries and high-purity electrolytes.

Material passivation

All media-contacting surfaces (316L/Hastelloy) undergo electrochemical passivation and final finishing to Ra ≤ 0.4 µm to minimize adhesion of contaminants and facilitate cleaning.

Tube materials for the battery industry

The choice of measuring tube material is determined by the composition of the dosed medium — from corrosive electrolytes to abrasive slurries.

Stainless steel 316L
Base material for organic solvents, NMP, carbonates. Chemical resistance to the main components of electrolytes and binders.
Hastelloy C4/C276
Recommended for fluorine-containing electrolytes (LiPF₆), acidic media, degradation products. Maximum corrosion resistance to HF.

Why Mass-EXPERT for battery production?

Coriolis direct mass measurement technology — the optimal solution for precision dosing in Li-ion battery manufacturing

Direct mass measurement

Dosing of active material and electrolyte components by mass rather than volume. Eliminates the influence of temperature and density — a key advantage when working with non-ideal mixtures of carbonates and solid additives.

Purity and leak-tightness

Fully welded design with no moving parts or seals. Complete sealing — no contact of the electrolyte with the atmosphere, which is critical for moisture-sensitive media (LiPF₆ reacts with moisture to form HF).

High dosing accuracy

Accuracy class 0.1–0.2% for liquids and slurries. Measurement repeatability of ±0.05% guarantees stability of the active material composition from batch to batch.

Multifunctionality

A single sensor simultaneously measures mass flow, density (concentration) and medium temperature — useful for monitoring cathode slurry composition and electrolyte density.

Minimal maintenance

No rotating parts — no wear. No need for regular calibration or seal replacement. Minimal operating costs and downtime in continuous production.

Abrasion resistance

L-type straight-tube sensors with minimal hydraulic resistance allow dosing of highly filled slurries (graphite, NMC, LFP) without erosion of the measuring path.

Accurate electrolyte dosing — the key to Li-ion cell quality

The amount of electrolyte injected into a battery cell directly affects its capacity, internal resistance and service life. The Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meter with 0.1% accuracy allows electrolyte dosing with high repeatability — from laboratory prototypes to mass production of 18650, 21700, 4680 and prismatic cells. ME100 in the configuration for small DN (DN01–DN08) provides metrological control at all dosing stages.

Recommended configurations

Optimal solutions for battery production

Proven combinations of sensors, materials and transmitters for typical battery industry tasks

Small DN for precision dosing

Compact small-diameter sensors for accurate dosing of small volumes — from laboratory benches to electrolyte injection lines.

  • DN01–DN08 for dosing from 0.1 to 200 kg/h
  • Ideal for electrolyte injection into individual cells
  • Straight-tube design (L-type) for viscous slurries
  • Minimal internal volume — lower losses of expensive reagents

Materials 316L / Hastelloy

Corrosion-resistant materials for contact with lithium-ion battery components — from organic solvents to fluorine-containing salts.

  • 316L — base material for carbonate solvents (EC, DMC, DEC)
  • Hastelloy C276 — resistance to HF (LiPF₆ degradation product)
  • Final finishing Ra ≤ 0.4 µm — minimal adhesion of contaminants

ME100 transmitter — metrological control

Specialized ME100 transmitter for tasks requiring increased measurement accuracy and digital signal processing.

  • Accuracy 0.1% — accuracy class for critical dosing
  • Digital signal processing (DSP) and self-diagnostics
  • Outputs: 4–20 mA (HART), RS-485 Modbus RTU, frequency/pulse

Sensors for slurries and active material

Configurations optimized for handling high-viscosity, thixotropic and abrasive slurries at all stages of active material preparation.

  • L-type sensors — no dead zones
  • Enlarged tube diameter for cathode/anode slurries (DN15–DN50)
  • Density measurement for monitoring solids concentration
  • Additional sensor heating to maintain stable viscosity

Recommendation for the electrolyte dosing line

For precision injection of electrolyte (LiPF₆ + EC/DMC/DEC) into battery cells, we recommend the following configuration: L-type sensor DN01–DN04 (small internal volume) + Hastelloy C276 tubes (HF resistance) + ME100 transmitter (accuracy class 0.1%, Modbus RTU). This combination provides dosing with an error of less than ±0.2% of the target volume and full traceability of results for quality validation of every cell.
