Measuring principle

Custody transfer metering of heat: mass flow rate + temperature

Accurate determination of heat energy requires measuring two parameters — mass flow rate and temperature difference

Thermal energy calculation

Q = m × c × (Tsup – Tret)

where Q is the amount of thermal energy (Gcal or kWh),
m is the mass of the heat transfer medium (kg) measured by the Coriolis flow meter,
c is the specific heat capacity of the heat transfer medium (kJ/(kg·°C)),
Tsup is the temperature in the supply pipeline,
Tret is the temperature in the return pipeline.

1
Mass flow rate — directly
A Coriolis flow meter measures mass, not volume. The error associated with changes in heat transfer medium density at different temperatures is eliminated.
2
Temperature measurement capability
The ME200 (Ex) transmitter accepts the signal from the built-in Pt100 resistance temperature detector to measure Tsup or Tret (depending on the installation point).
3
Thermal energy calculation
The flow meter transmits the mass flow rate and temperature (Tsup or Tret, depending on the installation point) over digital interfaces — the amount of heat is calculated by a heat calculator or a higher-level system.
4
Transmission of accumulated values
The totalizer accumulates mass, volume and flow; the accumulated values are transmitted over digital interfaces.
Advantages

Why Mass-EXPERT in thermal power?

Coriolis direct mass measurement technology — the optimal solution for heat supply and power generation tasks

Direct mass measurement

Eliminates errors caused by varying heat transfer medium density as temperature changes. Conventional volumetric meters require correction — the Coriolis method delivers an accurate result immediately.

Operation with high-temperature media

Special high-temperature version up to +350 °C for superheated water and steam. Resistance to thermal expansion without loss of accuracy.

Ex explosion protection

Transmitters and sensors with explosion protection — with ME100 transmitter: Ex db ib IIC T6 Gb; with ME200 transmitter: Ex db ia IIC T6 Gb; with ME200 (dust): Ex ia tb IIIC T80 °C Db; sensor: Ex ib IIC T6…T1 Gb (with ME100) / Ex ia IIC T6…T1 Ga (with ME200). For operation in boiler houses and thermal power plant fuel facilities. TR CU 012 certificate.

Optimal pressure loss

Pressure loss is pre-calculated when the size is selected for a specific process — keeping the operating point optimal for the system, including limited available head. The range includes U-, W-, V- and L-type measuring tubes: U — classic geometry, W and V — compact bends, L — straight tubes with minimal hydraulic resistance.

Custody transfer metering of heat

Thermal energy is calculated from the transmitted parameters: the flow meter sends the mass flow rate and temperature (Tsup or Tret, depending on the installation point) over digital interfaces to a heat calculator or the plant control system. Entered in the State Register of Measuring Instruments (No. 98506-26).

Minimal maintenance

No moving parts — no seal replacement and no wearing elements. Average service life of 20 years. Lower operating costs at metering units.

Why is a Coriolis flow meter better for custody transfer heat metering?

Conventional heat meters with volumetric flow meters (electromagnetic, ultrasonic, turbine) introduce additional error when converting volume to mass. Mass-EXPERT measures mass directly — this eliminates thermal expansion error and delivers the most accurate result for commercial settlements between heat energy suppliers and consumers. This is especially important in transition periods (autumn, spring), when the heat transfer medium temperature varies widely.

Recommended configurations

Optimal solutions for thermal power and utilities

Proven combinations of sensors and transmitters for typical industry tasks

U-type sensor DN15–DN100

U-shaped measuring tube geometry for thermal power tasks. The DN15 to DN100 size range covers typical flow rates:

  • DN15–DN25 — dosing of water treatment reagents
  • DN32–DN50 — metering units at central heating substations and individual heating points (supply/return)
  • DN65–DN100 — mainline heat inlets, fuel oil supply
  • High sensitivity at low flow rates (night modes)

ME200 (Ex) transmitter

Advanced transmitter with explosion protection for boiler houses and fuel facilities:

  • Two current outputs (mass flow rate + temperature)
  • Totalizer — accumulated mass and volume are transmitted over digital interfaces
  • RS-485 Modbus RTU + HART
  • Ex db ia IIC T6 Gb explosion protection

Isothermal jacket for fuel oil

Special design for viscous fuel requiring temperature maintenance — M-40 and M-100 fuel oil, heating oil:

  • Insulated jacket with measuring chamber heating — see the Isothermal jacket section
  • Maintained temperature of 50–80 °C to keep fuel oil fluid
  • Prevention of solidification and wax deposition in the measuring tubes
  • Can be supplied with steam or electric heating
  • Resistance to highly viscous media without loss of accuracy

Complete solution for a custody transfer heat metering unit

Mass-EXPERT + ME200 (Ex) — a configuration for a custody transfer thermal energy metering unit: heat transfer medium metering together with a third-party heat calculator. Measurement of mass flow rate and temperature in the supply and return pipelines with subsequent calculation of thermal energy. All data are transmitted via Modbus RTU to the APCS or to an automated commercial energy resource metering system (ASKUE).
