Coriolis flow meters for methanol dosing

Injection of hydrate inhibitor into wells, flowlines and gas treatment facilities

Mass flow meters Mass-EXPERT for methanol injection lines — measurement of micro flows from 0.1 kg/h at pressures of 12.5 / 25 / 45 MPa and above. Direct mass measurement in kilograms: the dose is compared with injection norms without density corrections, and the pulsating flow of plunger metering pumps does not distort the reading.

Challenges

Why methanol injection is a challenging task

Methanol is the primary hydrate inhibitor in gas production, gathering and treatment: per industry standards, more than 90% of the methanol consumed goes to protecting wells, flowlines and gas treatment facilities. A dosing error is costly both ways — underdosing leads to a hydrate plug and a well shutdown; overdosing means direct chemical losses and environmental limits.

Hydrates stop production

Gas hydrates form as temperature and pressure drop — in the wellbore, flowlines and at gas treatment facilities. A hydrate plug means a well shutdown, emergency heating and lost production.

Wellbore Flowlines Gas treatment

An expensive and toxic chemical

Methanol is a consumable costing tens of thousands of roubles per tonne, with strict handling requirements. Overconsumption means direct losses; spills and discharges bring environmental limits and reporting.

MeOH (methyl alcohol) Concentration 90–95%

Pulsating flow of the metering pump

A plunger metering pump delivers the chemical in individual strokes: the instantaneous flow swings from zero to peak values. Volumetric counters and rotameters show large errors on such flow.

High pressure and low flow rates

Injection lines are rated 12.5 / 25 / 45 MPa, while flow rates are measured in units and tens of kilograms per hour. The higher the pressure and the lower the flow, the fewer meters can handle this combination.

How injection is regulated

The minimum required methanol rate is calculated for every protected point, in kilograms per 1000 m³ of gas, using industry procedures. Actual chemical distribution across the lines is far from always confirmed by measurements.

15–20% margin
A reliable hydrate-free regime is achieved at a methanol concentration 15–20% above the theoretical value. Without flow control this margin turns into permanent overconsumption.
Every injection point
Methanol is injected into the wellbore, flowlines and at the inlet of gas treatment facilities. With common methanol lines, per-well distribution is especially difficult to verify.
Solution

How we address these challenges

Coriolis mass measurement removes the main uncertainty of injection: every line shows how much methanol actually went into the well — in kilograms, in real time

Mass, not volume

The dose is regulated in kilograms per 1000 m³ of gas — the meter reads directly in kg/h. Density, viscosity and temperature of methanol do not distort the result: no conversions required.

Tolerant to pulsation

Mass measurement is independent of the flow profile: the stroke-by-stroke delivery of a plunger pump does not turn into measurement error, and the total dose per shift, day and month is counted accurately.

Micro flows at pressure

D-type (Δ) sensors measure from 0.1 kg/h; P and PK versions are rated up to 45 and 96 MPa depending on size. Lines at 12.5 / 25 / 45 MPa — covered.

Density and temperature

Density and temperature are measured simultaneously: verify the chemical concentration in the tank and the line condition without extra sensors.

Ex protection for the field

ME100 / ME200 transmitters — Ex db ib / db ia IIC T6 Gb: for well pads and gas treatment facilities, including dust protection.

Integration with the control system

4–20 mA (HART), RS-485 Modbus RTU, frequency-pulse output: dose accounting in the DCS, archives, reporting and flow deviation alarms.

PK series on the pulsating flow of a metering pump

The PK series is built for demanding conditions: a wide U-shaped sensor with a reinforced design for ultra-high pressure — up to 96 MPa depending on size. The uneven delivery of a plunger pump is not a problem: the meter measures the mass passing through the tubes, so individual flow strokes do not accumulate into a systematic error. The total methanol consumption over any period stays reliable — use it to balance the chemical and optimize the dosing regime. Straight pipe runs upstream and downstream are not required: the meter fits compactly into the pump piping.

Track record on methanol facilities

The company's reference list includes a methanol control block for the Urengoyskoye oil, gas and condensate field and three methanol supply blocks for the Tympuchikanskoye field development (gas treatment facility) — projects of Gazpromneft-Zapolyarye. We understand the specifics of injection — the line, pressure, pump, regulations — and select the metering unit to match.

Recommended configuration for a methanol injection line

For a 25 MPa line at 2–10 kg/h: a D-type (Δ) DN01–DN02 sensor + ME200 (Ex) transmitter + frequency-pulse output to the dosing controller. Flow is visible in kg/h and as a total — the pump setting is adjusted against actual data, not nameplate strokes.

For 45 MPa — the P version; for ultra-high pressures and demanding conditions — the PK series. The exact size is selected against your working flow, pressure and connection type.

Cost of injection: before and after Coriolis metering

Methanol is a major cost item in production. Per-line metering lets you hold the minimum required dose and eliminate overconsumption — without risking a hydrate plug from underdosing.

What we compare Before: dosing without per-line metering After: every line measured by Mass-EXPERT
Actual line flow Unknown: estimated from pump strokes, tank level, calculations In kg/h and as a running total — in real time, for every unit
Dose setting Set by calculation with a margin; rarely adjusted — with common methanol lines the per-well distribution sticks at maximum Based on actual data: the effect of every adjustment is visible, including seasonal changes
Chemical overconsumption Systematic, accumulates unnoticed Eliminated: the dose stays at the minimum required level
Underdosing Discovered the hard way — hydrate plug and shutdown Visible immediately: a flow drop triggers a DCS alarm before complications
Accounting and reporting Indirect estimates Actual data for consumption norms, chemical balance and environmental reporting

Industry benchmark: in published cases of control-grade chemical injection with Coriolis measurement, overconsumption of chemicals was reduced by ≈20–25%.

Example: cost of injection

A line with an average flow of 10 kg/h consumes ≈ 87.6 t of methanol per year in continuous operation. At 35–45 thousand RUB/t the chemical costs 3.1–3.9 million RUB per year on a single line. At 5% overconsumption the loss is 150–200 thousand RUB/year; at 10% — 310–390 thousand RUB/year per line.

Savings are not the only effect: a stable dose reduces the risk of hydrate complications, and the actual flow of every line becomes input data for consumption norms and process conditions. The equipment is Russian-made: State Register No. 98506-26, service and verification in Russia.

Calculator: benefit and payback

Enter your own numbers — the calculation updates automatically. Numeric input only; the default values are an example.

Example: 10 kg/h of methanol means ≈ 88 t and 43,800 USD per year; removing 10% overconsumption saves ≈ 4,400 USD/year — with man-hours and risk the solution pays back in ≈ 17 months.

Assumptions: continuous operation 8,760 h/year; payback is calculated against the difference “solution cost − alternative”. The alternative is another meter type, existing metering or manual-control costs. If the alternative covers the cost, payback is instant.

The estimate is indicative: the methanol price is assumed at 35–45 thousand RUB/t (2026 estimate); actual injection conditions and prices are clarified during sizing. Send your line data — we will calculate the savings and select the size.
