Liquefied petroleum gas measurement

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters provide direct mass flow measurement of liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) in the liquid and gas phase — from propane and butane to industrial propane-butane mixtures.

Propane (C₃H₈)

Mass flow measurement of liquefied propane on gas holder refuelling lines, road tanker loading lines and custody transfer metering units. Direct mass measurement: unlike volumetric metering, the result does not depend on changes in product density. High accuracy is ensured at any temperature.

Butane (C₄H₁₀)

Metering of liquefied butane at gas filling stations and terminals. Stable operation at low temperatures and high pressures. A mass flow meter eliminates errors associated with volumetric expansion and density changes.

Technical propane-butane mixture (propane-butane technical mixture)

Measurement of the technical propane–butane mixture (propane-butane technical mixture) in various proportions — from winter to summer grades. The Coriolis principle ensures accuracy regardless of the actual component ratio in the mixture.

LPG during road tanker loading

Custody transfer metering of LPG during road tanker loading at gas filling stations. High-accuracy measurement of the shipped product mass with accuracy up to ±0.1% — minimal losses during dispensing.

Gas holder refuelling

Metering of liquefied gas when refuelling tank installations (gas holders) for autonomous gas supply. Accurate dosing and automatic recording of the refuelling volume for billing.

LPG at gas filling stations and distribution points

Process and custody transfer metering of LPG at gas filling stations (GNS) and gas distribution points (GRP). Integration with the APCS via RS-485 Modbus for automatic data acquisition.

Advantages

Why Mass-EXPERT for LPG?

Specialized solutions for custody transfer metering and process control of liquefied petroleum gases

Custody transfer ±0.1%

Direct measurement of LPG mass with accuracy ±0.1% for liquids. Entered in the State Register of Measuring Instruments (No. 98506-26). Full compliance with hydrocarbon custody transfer requirements without additional density and temperature correction.

Ex explosion protection

ME100 Ex and ME200 Ex transmitters with explosion protection for operation in hazardous areas of gas filling stations, tank farms and refuelling points. TR CU 012 certificate.

P design (pressure > 10 MPa)

Conventional LPG metering units operate at pressures up to 2.5 MPa. The P design (>10 MPa) is for special applications; the maximum working pressure depends on the size. The reinforced sensor design guarantees leak-tightness and safety.

003..P ≤45 MPa004..P ≤30 MPa008..P ≤45 MPa015..P ≤30/35 MPa025..P ≤45 MPa

Digital interfaces RS-485 Modbus

Integration with the plant APCS via RS-485 Modbus (RTU). Real-time transmission of mass flow, temperature, density, total quantity and diagnostic data.

Transmitter ME200 Ex

Advanced transmitter in an explosion-proof design with an LED display, two 4–20 mA current outputs (HART), a pulse output and RS-485 Modbus.

Wide range of sizes

U-type sizes (from DN03 to DN250) cover flow rates from gas holder refuelling to LPG trunk pipelines. The U-shaped sensor provides optimal sensitivity for gases.

LPG custody transfer — no density corrections

Coriolis flow meters Mass-EXPERT measure LPG mass directly, eliminating errors caused by density changes of the propane–butane mixture under temperature and pressure fluctuations. Unlike volumetric meters, they require no density correctors or temperature compensators. A single device replaces an entire measuring complex — mass flow, density, temperature and total quantity in one instrument.

Differential metering: liquid phase + vapour return

During LPG loading and transfer, the liquid phase runs to the receiving tank while displaced vapour returns to the supplier's tank through the vapour return line. The skid can meter both lines on a mass basis: a high-accuracy Coriolis meter on the liquid line and a mass meter on the vapour return line. Net delivered mass equals liquid mass minus returned vapour mass — with no density conversions and no loss on vapour-displacement operations.

Design P

P design flow meters for high pressure

The P modification >10 MPa is for special applications requiring pressure above the standard (≤10 MPa); the maximum working pressure depends on the size.

Pressure — by size (P design)

Reinforced measuring tubes and body withstand the operating pressure with a safety margin. The maximum working pressure in the P design depending on the size is given in the table below.

U-shaped sensor

The U-shaped geometry of the measuring tubes is the classic Coriolis flow meter configuration. High sensitivity, vibration resistance and zero-point stability when working with liquefied gases.

Explosion protection

Fully explosion-proof design for operation in hazardous areas of zones 0, 1 and 2. Intrinsically safe circuits ia and a flameproof enclosure (d) for the electronics.

RS-485 Modbus + HART

Two 4–20 mA current outputs with HART protocol support, an RS-485 Modbus interface (RTU), a pulse output for a totalizer. Full integration into the APCS.

P design — the standard for high-pressure LPG

Mass flow meters Mass-EXPERT in the P design are recommended for LPG custody transfer metering units at gas filling stations, liquefied gas transshipment terminals and refuelling complexes. The P design (up to 45 MPa), Ex explosion protection and ±0.1% accuracy — for demanding applications with LPG at pressures above 10 MPa (conventional LPG metering units operate at pressures up to 2.5 MPa).

Materials

Tube and body materials for LPG service

Liquefied petroleum gases do not require special alloys for corrosion protection, but for a number of applications (LPG with H₂S impurities, wet gas) Mass-EXPERT offers corrosion-resistant versions.

Stainless steel 316L
The standard material for tubes and body. Low-carbon austenitic stainless steel — optimal for clean LPG (propane, butane and technical propane-butane mixtures).
Hastelloy C276 / C4
Nickel alloy with high corrosion resistance. Recommended for LPG with hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) impurities and wet gas.

Recommendation for an LPG custody transfer metering unit (GNS)

For a typical LPG custody transfer metering unit at a gas filling station (LPG working pressure up to 2.5 MPa), choose the combination:

For gas holder refuelling stations and road tanker loading — a U-shaped sensor of the appropriate size with flanged connections. The P design (>10 MPa) is applied only in special installations.
