Advantages

Why Mass-EXPERT for LNG?

Cryogenic LNG metering places special demands on flow meters. Mass-EXPERT in the L design is engineered for operation in the harshest conditions.

Cryogenic L design

A special sensor design for operation at temperatures from −196 °C to +150 °C. Thermally insulated housing, cryo-resistant seals and materials that retain ductility in extreme cold.

High custody transfer metering accuracy

Mass flow measurement accuracy ±0.5% for liquids — for cryogenic media this is an honest, clearly stated accuracy class, sufficient for commercial LNG operations. Direct mass measurement without density correction.

Continuous density measurement (on-line)

Simultaneous real-time determination of LNG mass flow rate, density and temperature. Product quality control and automatic conversion of volume to standard conditions.

Ex explosion protection

ME200 Ex transmitter in an explosion-proof design for installation in hazardous areas.

U / Δ sensor type

U / Δ-shaped measuring tubes (Δ-shaped — for DN25 only), optimized for cryogenic media. High sensitivity and zero-point stability at minimum flow rates.

Cryogenic materials

Measuring tubes made of 316L stainless steel with low-temperature treatment.

The L design — the standard for cryogenic metering

The cryogenic L design of Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters is purpose-built for operation with liquefied gases at temperatures down to −196 °C. The thermally insulated sensor housing, cryo-resistant tube and seal materials, as well as the optimized sensor design provide high custody transfer metering accuracy for LNG at −162 °C at all stages — from acceptance to regasification. The L design is available for sizes DN08, DN25, DN40, DN50 and DN80 with type U tubes (Δ — DN25 only).

L design (cryogenic)

Mass-EXPERT cryogenic sensor for LNG

The L design is a specialized modification of Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters for measuring liquefied gases and cryogenic liquids. Sealed thermal insulation and cryo-resistant materials guarantee reliable operation at −162 °C.

Temperature range −196…+150 °C

A wide operating temperature range.

High sensitivity

U-shaped tubes (also Δ-shaped, with increased oscillation amplitude) provide an excellent signal-to-noise ratio for cryogenic liquids — even at minimum flow rates.

Tube types U and Δ

The U-shaped type is optimal for a wide flow rate range. The Δ-shaped type is a compact design for limited space (in the cryogenic design). Both types are available with self-draining for cryogenic applications.

Cryogenic LNG metering: what is important to know

The L design solves three key tasks of cryogenic metering:

  1. minimizing heat ingress to the medium (thermally insulated housing);
  2. maintaining leak-tightness under cyclic thermal shocks (special seals);
  3. stability of metrological characteristics at −162 °C — the 316L measuring tubes undergo cryogenic stabilization (thermal cycling).

In combination with the ME200 Ex transmitter (explosion protection IIC T6 Gb) and U-shaped sensors (Δ type — DN25 only), the L design is a ready-made solution for custody transfer metering of LNG.

Boil-off gas (BOG) and differential metering

Part of the loaded LNG evaporates — it leaves through a dedicated boil-off gas (BOG) line and can also be measured on a mass basis. Loading and bunkering use a differential arrangement: net transferred product equals liquid mass minus boil-off and return gas mass. Coriolis meters cover both lines, and the energy value (MWh, Gcal) is calculated by the skid computer from composition data.

Materials

Cryogenic materials for LNG

Special materials that retain strength, ductility and leak-tightness at cryogenic temperatures of −162 °C and below. All materials have passed cyclic thermal shock testing.

316L (cryo-treated)
Austenitic stainless steel with low-temperature treatment. It retains impact toughness and ductility at −196 °C. The main material of the L design measuring tubes.
PTFE / Teflon
Polytetrafluoroethylene for cryogenic seals. Chemically inert, it maintains leak-tightness at −196…+150 °C. It does not become brittle under extreme cooling.
PEEK (polyetheretherketone)
A high-strength polymer for sealing elements and insulators. Excellent dielectric properties, resistance to cryogenic temperatures and cyclic loads.
Vacuum thermal insulation
The sensor housing can be evacuated — this reduces heat ingress to the cryogenic medium and prevents frost formation on the flow meter housing.
Inert gas filling
The sensor housing is filled with an inert gas (nitrogen) and sealed — preventing moisture and condensation inside the housing and ice formation at cryogenic temperatures.
