Measurement of hydrogen and hydrogen-containing mixtures

Mass-EXPERT Coriolis flow meters provide direct mass flow measurement of gaseous hydrogen (H₂) and hydrogen-containing gas mixtures over a wide pressure range — from tens of bar to ultra-high 96 MPa (960 bar).

Gaseous hydrogen (H₂)

Mass flow measurement of high-purity gaseous hydrogen (99.9–99.999%) on refuelling, storage and distribution lines. Direct mass measurement eliminates errors associated with gas compressibility.

Pressurised H₂ refuelling

Flow meters for hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) with working pressures of 35–96 MPa. Certified solutions for custody transfer metering of hydrogen when refuelling passenger and commercial vehicles.

Dosing for fuel cells

Precision dosing of hydrogen into fuel cells and power units. High accuracy at low flow rates — the optimal solution for laboratory benches and industrial systems.

Hydrogen-containing mixtures

Measurement of synthesis gas (H₂ + CO), hydrogen–methane mixtures (H₂ + CH₄), purge gases and other hydrogen-containing compositions in petrochemicals, metallurgy and power generation.

Challenges of hydrogen energy

Why Mass-EXPERT for hydrogen?

Measuring hydrogen is one of the most challenging tasks in flow metering. Mass-EXPERT solves it through special design and materials engineering solutions.

Resistance to hydrogen embrittlement

Tube and housing materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement are selected according to the working pressure and media composition — this eliminates the risk of failure under the action of H₂.

Working pressure up to 96 MPa

The PK version (ultra-high pressure) ensures reliable operation at pressures up to 96 MPa. The reinforced sensor design and special seals guarantee leak-tightness and safety.

High accuracy at low gas flow rates

Increased tube oscillation amplitude and precision electronics ensure stable readings even at the minimal hydrogen flow rates typical of fuel cell dosing.

Special connections

Support for high-pressure standards: UNF (Unified Fine Thread), VCO (O‑Ring Face Seal), VCR (Metal Gasket Face Seal). Leak-tight connections for ultra-high pressure without leaks.

U-shaped PK sensor

The wide U-shaped tube type (PK modification) is optimised for high-pressure gases. Maximum sensitivity to mass flow.

Full parameter monitoring

Simultaneous measurement of mass flow rate, density and temperature — in one instrument. Full real-time monitoring of the hydrogen system condition.

Hydrogen embrittlement — the key challenge for flow meters

Molecular hydrogen at high pressures penetrates the crystal lattice of metals, causing loss of ductility and crack formation (hydrogen embrittlement). Mass-EXPERT flow meters use special alloys with low susceptibility to H₂. This guarantees the integrity of the measuring tubes and operational safety throughout the entire service life.

PK design

PK flow meters for ultra-high pressure

The PK modification (Pressure — high pressure, K — wide U-shaped tube) is purpose-designed for service with hydrogen and other gases at ultra-high pressures.

Pressure up to 96 MPa

Maximum working pressure up to 96 MPa. The working pressure the instrument is rated for exceeds the declared nominal.

Materials resistant to H₂ embrittlement

Measuring tubes made of materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement (316L, 904L, Hastelloy, Titanium, Duplex, Tantalum — selected to suit the application). Smooth internal surface — minimal hydraulic resistance.

High accuracy at low flow rates

The increased oscillation amplitude of the U-shaped tubes provides a high signal-to-noise ratio even at minimum hydrogen flow rates — ideal for dosing.

UNF / VCO / VCR connections

Support for standard high-pressure connections: UNF thread for straight fittings, VCO (O-ring seal) and VCR (metal seal) for maximum leak-tightness.

The PK design — the standard for hydrogen infrastructure

Mass flow meters Mass-EXPERT in the PK design are recommended for hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) with pressures of 70 MPa (700 bar) and 96 MPa (960 bar), dosing of H₂ into fuel cells in transport and stationary power units, as well as for custody transfer metering of hydrogen in distribution networks. The combination of resistance to H₂ embrittlement, ultra-high pressure and precision accuracy makes the PK design the industry standard for hydrogen energy.

Materials

Special materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement

For safe operation with high-pressure hydrogen, Mass-EXPERT uses materials that have passed special tests for resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (hydrogen embrittlement resistance).

Hastelloy C276 / C4
Nickel alloy with high resistance to hydrogen corrosion. Recommended for media with H₂S impurities and wet hydrogen.
Stainless steel 316L
Austenitic stainless steel with low carbon content. Suitable for moderate H₂ pressures.
