Challenges of cryogenic measurement

Why Mass-EXPERT for cryogenic media?

Cryogenic liquid flow measurement is one of the most challenging tasks in flow metering. Mass-EXPERT solves it through dedicated design and materials engineering solutions.

Operation down to −196 °C

The L design ensures reliable operation at medium temperatures from −196 °C to +150 °C. Special cryogenic materials of the housing and sensor prevent brittleness and deformation in extreme cold.

High sensitivity at low flow rates

The increased oscillation amplitude of U- and Δ-type tubes combined with precision electronics ensures stable readings even at minimum cryogenic liquid flow rates — ideal for dosing.

Isothermal jacket

Special cryogenic sensor insulation — the isothermal jacket — minimizes heat ingress from the environment, prevents icing and ensures measurement stability.

U and Δ sensor types

Proven U-shaped and Δ-shaped measuring tube geometry. Maximum sensitivity to mass flow and minimal hydraulic resistance. Measurement is designed for single-phase cryogenic liquids; two-phase flows are a source of additional error — design selection available on request.

DN08–DN80 — flexibility of choice

A wide range of sizes covers flow rates from laboratory dosing (DN08) to large LNG process streams (DN80). The optimal solution for any cryogenic application.

Density and temperature monitoring

Simultaneous measurement of mass flow rate, density and temperature of the cryogenic medium — in a single device. Real-time product quality and process parameter control.

Cryogenic temperatures — the main challenge for flow meters

At temperatures below −150 °C, most structural materials lose ductility and become brittle. Mass-EXPERT in the L design uses special cryogenic alloys and design solutions that have passed cyclic testing at −196 °C. The isothermal jacket protects the sensor from icing and thermal shocks, while U- and Δ-shaped tubes provide high sensitivity even at low cryogenic liquid flow rates — down to the minimum flow rates of laboratory dosing of LN₂ and LO₂.

Advantages

Mass-EXPERT advantages in cryogenic technologies

Coriolis direct mass measurement technology — the optimal solution for cryogenic media

L design for cryogenic conditions

The special L design is engineered for handling cryogenic liquids at temperatures down to −196 °C. Cryogenic resistance of materials, isothermal insulation and compact construction.

Direct mass measurement

Eliminates the influence of varying density and temperature of the cryogenic medium.

High accuracy across the entire range

Turndown ratio up to 100:1 while maintaining the specified accuracy. From precision dosing (DN08) to maximum LNG flow rates (DN80) — measurement error for cryogenic liquids from ±0.5%.

Minimal maintenance

No moving parts — no wear items. The cryogenic design requires no regular seal replacement or connection re-tightening. Average service life — 20 years.

Isothermal protection

The sensor isothermal jacket (optional) prevents icing of external surfaces, reduces heat ingress and eliminates the effect of temperature gradient on measurement accuracy.

Multifunctionality

Simultaneous measurement of mass flow rate, density and medium temperature. One device replaces several, simplifying the I&C system and reducing the cost of ownership.

Materials

Cryogenic materials and design solutions

Special materials that retain strength, ductility and leak-tightness at cryogenic temperatures down to −196 °C. All materials have passed cyclic thermal shock testing.

316L (cryo-treated)
Austenitic stainless steel with low-temperature treatment. It retains impact toughness and ductility at −196 °C. The main material of the L design measuring tubes.
PTFE / Teflon
Polytetrafluoroethylene for cryogenic seals. Chemically inert, it maintains leak-tightness at −196…+150 °C. It does not become brittle under extreme cooling.
PEEK (polyetheretherketone)
A high-strength polymer for sealing elements and insulators. Excellent dielectric properties, resistance to cryogenic temperatures and cyclic loads.
Vacuum thermal insulation
The sensor housing can be evacuated — this reduces heat ingress to the cryogenic medium and prevents frost formation on the flow meter housing.
Inert gas filling
The sensor housing is filled with an inert gas (nitrogen) and sealed — preventing moisture and condensation inside the housing and ice formation at cryogenic temperatures.
