Coriolis flow meters for hydrogen refueling (HRS)

Hydrogen refueling stations, H₂ dispensers and hydrogen dosing

Mass flow meters Mass-EXPERT for hydrogen refueling: the PK execution up to 96 MPa (960 bar) covers the H70 line; wetted parts are made of materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement and work on gas cooled to −40 °C. Challenges

Why hydrogen refueling is a challenge for measurement

Hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) are the most demanding segment of gas-fuel infrastructure: fuel-cell bus and truck fleets keep growing, stations are designed around the H35 and H70 protocols, and every refueling is a commercial operation with expensive fuel. Pressure, cold and hydrogen embrittlement create measurement tasks that no other refueling application has.

Ultra-high pressure: 350 and 700 bar

To pack enough energy into a vehicle tank, hydrogen is compressed to 350 bar (H35) and 700 bar (H70), while station supply lines operate at pressures up to ~1,000 bar. The measurement must happen right on that line — all the way to the nozzle.

H35 / H70 up to ~1,000 bar in the line

Hydrogen embrittlement of metal

Hydrogen atoms are the smallest: they diffuse into the metal lattice and embrittle ordinary steels. Under pressure such metal develops microcracks and fails — wetted parts must be made of special materials.

Special materials

Cold gas at −40 °C and thermal shocks

Before refueling, hydrogen is pre-cooled so the tank does not overheat: the meter works on flow at temperatures down to −40 °C. At the start of a fill the pressure travels from minimum to working values within seconds, and these cycles repeat with every refueling.

Pre-cooling −40 °C Pressure steps

Speed and the cost of error

A fill lasts just minutes, and a kilogram of hydrogen is among the most expensive fuels on the market. A fraction of a percent of measurement error accumulates in every settlement between the station and the customer — an approved measuring instrument and honest mass are a must.

Reference points for hydrogen measurement

How custody transfer works at a hydrogen refueling site and what to rely on when selecting a meter.

Mass first
Hydrogen density varies by hundreds of percent with temperature and pressure — volumetric units are unreliable at the dispenser. Measurement and settlements are based on mass.
PK execution: up to 96 MPa
For refueling lines at 35–96 MPa the PK execution is available — a wide U-shaped sensor and high-pressure connections. For 70 MPa (700 bar) stations, size 003..PK is recommended.
IIC explosion protection
Hydrogen belongs to group IIC — the most ignition-prone gas group, along with acetylene. The instruments are marked Ex db ib / db ia IIC T6 Gb (ME100 / ME200).
Materials against embrittlement
Wetted parts are made of special materials with high resistance to hydrogen penetration into the metal. For high-pressure installations this is standard practice.
Solution

How Mass-EXPERT solves hydrogen refueling tasks

Coriolis mass measurement is the global standard for hydrogen custody transfer: mass does not depend on pressure or compressibility, and special materials remove the main risk of hydrogen infrastructure.

Mass at ultra-high pressure

The PK execution withstands up to 96 MPa (960 bar) — the H70 line is covered with margin. The meter measures mass directly: hydrogen compressibility and density do not distort the result.

Resistance to H₂ embrittlement

All wetted parts are made of special materials resistant to hydrogen penetration — for high-pressure installations this is the standard execution.

Operation on pre-cooled gas

The −40 °C flow after the chiller is within the instruments' working range with margin. “Fill — pause” thermal cycling does not affect mass measurement stability.

High-pressure connections

UNF, VCO and VCR (metal seal) connections are rated for ultra-high pressure; the compact sensor fits into the dispenser piping with no straight runs required.

IIC protection and integration

The Ex db ib / db ia IIC T6 Gb marking covers hydrogen; flow rate and totalizer are transmitted to the dispenser controller via RS-485 (Modbus), HART, CAN or pulse output.

Typical hydrogen dispenser flow path

Custody transfer is measured on the supply line — after cooling and before the nozzle. The meter reports mass and totalizer to the dispenser controller, which runs the refueling protocol and the customer settlement.

Flow path: Buffer storage 960 bar Chiller −40 °C Mass-EXPERT (PK) Breakaway valve H70 nozzle FCEV tank

The layout and installation point are confirmed against the dispenser design: the meter is installed in-line without straight runs, and the separate design allows the transmitter to be placed away from the service area.

PK execution: pressures and connections

Models 003..PK — up to 96 MPa, 004..PK — up to 35 MPa, 008..PK and 015..PK — up to 30 MPa (3/4″ fitting) or up to 45 MPa (13/16–16 UNF thread). Connections — UNF, VCO and VCR. For 70 MPa (700 bar) and 96 MPa (960 bar) stations, size 003..PK is recommended.

What accurate measurement delivers at a hydrogen station

Hydrogen is one of the most expensive fuels, and every refueling is a settlement. Accurate mass and durable materials support both the economics and the reputation of the station.

What we compare Before: volumetric metering and material risks After: Mass-EXPERT mass measurement
Accuracy on expensive fuel Fractions of a percent of error are multiplied by the price of hydrogen in every transaction Mass in kilograms is fixed directly; ±0.5–1.0% depending on size (from ±0.5% for hydrogen configurations)
Safety and service life Ordinary steel embrittles in hydrogen — risk of microcracks and leaks Embrittlement-resistant materials and leak-tight high-pressure connections (VCO, VCR)
Settlements with the customer Volume or density-based recalculations — grounds for disputes The receipt and the station balance show the same net mass
