Coriolis flow meters for CNG (methane) refueling

Accurate measurement of gas delivered at CNG filling stations and fuel dispensers

Mass flow meters Mass-EXPERT for compressed natural gas refueling lines: operating pressure 250–350 bar (up to 45 MPa depending on size). Direct mass measurement: readings are independent of pressure and temperature, while the delivered volume is converted to standard conditions. A compact sensor fits into the dispenser without straight pipe runs.

Challenges

Why CNG refueling measurement is a hard task

Compressed natural gas is a motor fuel delivered at 250–350 bar: Russia operates more than 1,000 methane filling stations, and the gas vehicle fleet keeps growing. Every refueling is a commercial transaction — measurement errors accumulate in receipts, station balance and disputes with customers.

250–350 bar and pulsating supply

Gas is supplied from storage banks: valve switching and actuation create surges and water-hammer effects. The metering unit in the line must handle the working pressure with headroom and keep its accuracy during transients.

Pulsation and vibration of the equipment

Fast-acting valves operate inside the dispenser, with the compressor station right next to it. Pulsation and vibration disturb meters that are sensitive to flow profile: the flow drops to zero and spikes back within fractions of a second.

Fast-acting valves Compressor station

Methane compressibility: volume “floats”

Gas volume depends on pressure and temperature: methane cools down as it expands (Joule–Thomson effect), and line conditions change from −40 °C in winter to +50 °C in summer. Volumetric metering without conversion to standard conditions accumulates a systematic error in every receipt.

Compressibility −40…+50 °C m³ at std. cond.

Every refueling is a commercial transaction

Fuel delivery means settlements with the customer, under-delivery claims and inspections. Measurements used for money are performed by instruments of an approved type — with a valid verification and reproducible results.

Reference points for CNG measurement

Key documents behind refueling measurements: gas quality as a fuel, volume conversion and metrological requirements for metering instruments.

GOST 27577-2000
Compressed natural gas as fuel for internal combustion engines — requirements for CNG as a motor fuel: composition, calorific value, impurities.
GOST 2939-63
Conditions for bringing gas volume to standard conditions (20 °C, 101.325 kPa). These cubic metres are the units in which gas is measured and sold at CNG dispensers.
State Register No. 98506-26
Mass-EXPERT meters are entered in the State Register of Measuring Instruments; verification follows procedure MP 98506-26. Settlements are based on an instrument of an approved type.
Mass first, volume after
Modern CNG dispensers measure gas mass first, and derive the volume at standard conditions and the price from it. Mass measurement is independent of pressure and temperature.
Solution

How Mass-EXPERT solves CNG measurement tasks

Coriolis mass measurement is the industry standard for CNG dispensers: the delivered quantity is fixed in kilograms, and the volume at standard conditions is derived from mass.

Mass instead of volume

The delivered quantity is fixed in kilograms: pressure, temperature and flow profile do not distort the result. Delivered volume is converted to standard conditions with ±0.75% error when the gas composition is known.

Tolerant to pulsation and hammer effects

Mass measurement does not depend on flow profile: storage bank switching, valve actuation and supply surges do not turn into systematic error. The total delivered quantity per shift and per day stays accurate.

Compact sensor for the dispenser

Straight runs upstream and downstream are not required. U- and K-type sensors take minimum space in the dispenser piping: the meter fits directly into the refueling line.

Ex protection for the dispenser area

ME100 / ME200 transmitters: Ex db ib / db ia IIC T6 Gb with dust protection — designed for hazardous areas where refueling equipment operates.

Direct integration into the dispenser controller

RS-485 Modbus RTU, 4–20 mA (HART), CAN, frequency/pulse output: flow rate and totalizer go directly to the dispenser electronics — no intermediate converters required.

Russian instrument: register, verification, service

The meter is entered in the Russian State Register (No. 98506-26), verification follows MP 98506-26, service is provided in Russia. Replacing an imported meter on a CNG line is done by mounting and connection dimensions.

P and PK versions: pressure with headroom

For 250–350 bar lines, P versions (up to 45 MPa depending on size) and the PK series (up to 96 MPa, reinforced wide U-sensor) are available. The working pressure of the line is covered with a margin — the meter never operates at its limit. The medium temperature range of P versions is −50…+150 °C.

Typical refueling line layout

The meter is installed in the delivery line — between the dispenser valve and the refueling nozzle — and transmits data to the controller. Typical layout:

CNG line 25–35 MPa Filter Dispenser valve Mass-EXPERT Refueling nozzle Vehicle cylinder

Everything else is the task of the dispenser electronics: it receives the mass flow rate and the totalizer and calculates the delivered quantity. The exact layout is defined by the dispenser design.

What accurate CNG measurement delivers

Meter accuracy directly affects receipts, the station balance and customer trust — at every refueling, day after day.

What we compare Before: volumetric metering, condition-dependent After: Mass-EXPERT mass measurement
Measurement result Depends on pressure, temperature and gas composition — every refueling under its own conditions Mass in kilograms is fixed directly; volume at standard conditions is computed (±0.75% with known composition)
Over-delivery Gas delivered beyond the measured quantity is a direct loss for the station Delivery matches the measured quantity within the meter error (±0.5–1.0% for gas)
Under-delivery and disputes Receipt vs cylinder mismatch — claims and lost customers Fair for both parties: the mass that actually reached the cylinder is measured
Balance and reporting Inflow and delivery reconciled “by remainder”, error accumulates Per-line delivery accounting: totalizers and archives for the system and reporting

Errors: gas mass ±0.5–1.0%, volume at standard conditions ±0.75% with known gas composition. The actual effect depends on station throughput — we will estimate it from your data.

For dispenser manufacturers, station owners and their customers

For dispenser manufacturers: a ready metering unit with direct digital output (Modbus / pulse), no straight runs — a more compact dispenser with simpler integration.

For station owners: delivery and balance reconcile by mass, fewer disputes and losses; service and verification in Russia, without supply chains of imported instruments.

For station customers: what you pay for matches the gas that actually went into the cylinder.
